The election was not as close as many had anticipated. Obama won the electoral college to remain our President with 303 votes, while winning the state of Virginia with 50.8% of the popular vote. Democrat Timothy Kaine won the open seat in the senate with 52.4% of the popular vote. More information later!

Voters report five-hour waits to vote in Chesapeake
Voters Virginia have been stuck in line from anywhere between 3-5 hours. Some Virginians have been feeling as if this is a stop to their right to vote. Although this has been the story in many states, the areas with the highest holdup mysteriously have a higher black population, and a lot of the same polling places that caused issues in the 2008 election are the same ones being affected today.

What will be on a ballot in Virginia?
http://www2.timesdispatch.com/news/virginia-politics/2012/nov/04/tdmain16-whats-on-the-statewide-ballot-tuesday-ar-2335279/
Ballots next Tuesday will contain many different candidate names for Virginians to choose from. This article helps to make the choices clear. Every voter should take the time to investigate where these candidates stand on the issues that matter the most to them, and then make a choice. Voting is a right that we are lucky to have as Americans, don't sit back! Jim Webb, a democrat, is retiring after his six year term, leaving a senate seat open to a new candidate. Republican George Allen and Democrat Tim Kaine will battle it out in a very close race. Also, all 11 seats in the House of Representatives are up for re-election. There are many things to be paying attention to as election day draws near. Be informed & go vote!

Second Presidential Debate: Obama vs. Romney (Full Length Video 10/16/12)
Tonight's debate. Obama seemed much stronger in this town hall forum than in the previous debate. After more sleep this debate will be analyzed further.... But you may want to take a look at some 'facts'....
http://www.eenews.net/public/Greenwire/2012/02/27/4 and also, remember to pay attention to body language. Who do you think was more comfortable in front of average Americans? Confidence and intelligence in a town hall style debate or discussion can be very convincing when it makes the listener feel connected to the information being presented... Take a look.. http://www.mercurynews.com/presidentelect/ci_21789981/debate-body-language-testy-and-tense-exchange

2012 Candidate Tracker via POLITICO.com
2012 Presidential Election - Candidate Tracker - POLITICO.com
This is a very cool tracker of where the presidential candidates are at on the map. Obviously as the race heats up they will be spending more and more time in the key swing states and my assumption is trying to get the students to vote for them! Republican candidate Mitt Romney will be hosting a rally in Richmond, Virginia this coming Friday, October 12. He will be holding this rally at the Mobility Center near the mall and the car dealerships in Richmond. The mobility center is a vehicle designer for disabled persons, mainly targeting veterans who need support. -See link above

Turnin up the heat in AZ! -Voter ID cards with 11/8 election day in Spanish
Maricopa County Elections Department admits error on date of general election on voter ID card
Just an interesting tid-bit that popped up today in Maricopa County, Arizona. Up to fifty (maybe more) of the state issued voter I.D. cards, printed so close to election day, had November 8th written in Spanish. The English version had the correct date. Fishy?? Over 1/3 of the city's population is of latino heritage.
This is the 'city' area of Phoenix. Huge latino population along with a very widely diverse population. I have a hard time thinking that these voter I.D. cards in the area were printed incorrectly on accident.
The government in the Phoenix area is very harsh on the immigrant population here, not long ago attempting to pass a law that allows police to pull over and check the papers of anyone looking like an undocumented resident. Phoenix's county sheriff Joe Arpaio is actually nicknamed the "immigrant fighter" among many social groups. The articles linked below show you a little about the mindset of the people in charge of government happening in Phoenix.

Obamanos!
A recent article has come out projecting the Latino vote in Virginia. Latino voters in Virginia grew by 76% since 2000. According to a new poll taken by Latino Decisions, 66% of Latino voters in Virginia will vote for President Obama where only 22% will vote for challenger Mitt Romney. The numbers are up from a poll taken in June where Barack Obama saw a 17 point increase while Mitt Romney saw a 6 point decrease. Mitt Romney's stance on immigaration has turned away many latino voters from the Republican nominee. Many latinos see Obama and other Democrats as champions of immigration reform.
Matt Barreto an assistant professor at the University of Washington is quoted as saying, "President Obama's decision in June to grant deferred action to DREAMers marked a 'turning point' among Latino voters around the country, making them significantly more enthusiastic about voting in November-and national polling results understate the level of enthusiasm among Latino voters in battleground states like Virginia, who are more engaged than Latinos in less-contested states like California and Texas."
Will the latino vote in Virginia sway the state in Obama's favor or will Romney be able to hold on in a close fight to the White House? Latinos for Obama Latino polls in Virginia

Healthcare: Human right or Luxury?
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/15/opinion/krugman-death-by-ideology.html?smid=pl-share
Just a little article about the difference between Republicans and Democrats on the topic of healthcare for anyone who's trying to do a little research. I personally have a very hard time believeing what comes out of any politicians mouth, so digging up articles analyzing what they see always seems easier. Where do we draw the line in America between should's and ought to's? It is clearly not 'normal' to justify that only certain citizens deserve healthcare. In November, we will all have to make a choice on this along with many other issues bigger than our social a rationale for our voting habits. I encourage everyone to look clearly at the facts and get informed before stepping in line to vote.

President Obama tries to find student support that helped him in 2008
In Virginia, Obama Sounds Call for Young Voters
As Virginia's polls stay very close in Virginia, the President tries to cue into that student population that helped to send him to victory in 2008. Students are often the hardest group to round up, as we are still not entirely sure of our status in society yet or the identity that we want others to perceive. It is hard to feel as if our votes individually make any difference at all, especially when we are drowning in a sea of information that is so interdisciplinary. Another reason is because we simply don't feel as if our vote is going to make a difference. President Obama seems to clearly recognize the importance of abating these fears and is trying to do what he can to pull in the student vote. I feel very strongly that the student vote changed the election of 2008 in ways that a lot of people did not see coming, and I am hoping to once again feel proud of my generation for their participation in the choosing of the leaders of our country.

Presidential Election Voting History
http://www.270towin.com/simulation/2012_daily_trends/
Virginia has been known as a crucial swing state to politicians for many years. As we can see, Virginia has tended to vote Republican since the 70's, but leaned Democratic slightly enough for Obama to take the state in the last presidential election. Two big reasons that Virginia is such a 'hot' swing state for the candidates is because of slightness of points separating the current public standing and the fact that Virginia has 13 electoral votes.

First debate tonight in Colorado
As we suspected, the entire debate focused around the economy, healthcare, and jobs. The candidates also argued a lot about the role of government in the American lifestyle and what it means to maintain our nation. Romney seemed to attack President Obama on things that were untrue, as Obama then responded by stretching the truth about Governor Romney's campaign promises. As the debate neared the end, Romney seemed to emulate the attitude presented by his fellow Republican Tommy Thompson last week. It was just more political bickering amid an onslaught of deceit.

Body language really can speak volumes! Try to pay attention to movements, tensions, gestures, tones, and ethos as the debate goes on. You can try muting it for awhile as well to try and see what you can infer from the pure visual affects of their body language.

New polls out of Virginia show closer ranks with Obama slightly in the lead, as opposed to polls analyzed immeadiately after Romney video was released to the public. Has the reaction waned, or did we make the mistake of assuming that he would be that far ahead in Virginia?

Obama leads way in key states

This is an interesting article that portrays the emergence of Obama as the poll leader in two key swing states (Wisconsin and Virgina) and predicted to emerge as the leader in the Colorado polls as well. I cannot help but equate that some of this sudden spike in Obama approval has to have something to do with the video of Romney last week where he bashes many welfare/government assisted voters in states, such as Wisconsin, with very high levels of poverty despite jobs in the state.

Paul Ryan to visit Virginia on Wednesday the 19th
Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan will be campaigning in Virginia Wednesday the 19th. He will be speaking at a rally at Piedmont Precision Machine in Danville. Danville is an independent city in the south central area of the state bordering North Carolina. This is the third visit to Virginia in a week for the Romney campaign. The Obama campaign has also stopped in Virginia recently with First Lady Michelle Obama there last Thursday and the President planning a visit for Friday. President Obama won the city of Danville in the 2008 election against opponent John McCain 59%-40%. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/virginia-politics/post/paul-ryan-to-campaign-in-danville-va/2012/09/17/f349cdae-0107-11e2-b260-32f4a8db9b7e_blog.html
